Willing to Fail
Matthew 14:29-31 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
One of our greatest fears is the fear of failure. Nobody likes to fail, leading to a generation that refuses to try. We prefer to do only what we know we can do well, yet the Bible teaches a different approach. When trusting the Lord, we are encouraged to take a step of faith, trusting that the Lord will see us through.
While out on the boat in the middle of a storm, the disciples looked out to see what they first thought to be a ghost. As Jesus revealed himself to them and commanded Peter to come, Peter took a step of faith and began walking on the water. In that moment, Jesus knew he was going to fear the storm around him and fall into the waves. Peter, not knowing the outcome, was willing to fail for Jesus.
The beauty of this is that when Peter doubted and failed, Jesus did not abandon him. Jesus saved Peter, lifting him out of the water. There is peace in knowing that Jesus is there to pick us up whenever we do fail. But He is urging you today to take that step of faith. Share Jesus with someone. Serve in the church in an area you don’t typically serve. Do what is uncomfortable. Be willing to fail, knowing that Jesus is always there to pull you out of the waves, build you up, and lead you to the next mountain top.
